Abstract Many developing countries have paid increasing attention to macroeconomic management in their planning processes in the last decade or so. However, sufficient emphasis has not been placed on exploring appropriate analytical tools to evaluate the effectiveness of their macroeconomic management policies. This article presents an econometric framework to analyse the impact of those policies which can be implemented for macroeconomic management in developing countries. The study covers the period since 1970 and uses Sri Lanka as a case study, since it contains common and salient features typical of developing countries. The estimated model is tested for its validity using accepted criteria in applied econometrics and is used for policy simulation which eventually gives a clear understanding of the effectiveness of macroeconomic management policies such as the exchange rate, and monetary and fiscal policies. Such a comprehensive understanding is vital to policymakers prior to formulating a policy package for their country. --Journal abstract
