Abstract This article aims to give an overall review of the housing situation in India for the period from 1961 to 1991. This is discusses with reference to housing stock and its quality, housing shortages, and construction materials. Housing strategies adopted and programmes implemented by the central government are reviewed. The National Housing Policy of the Government of India is also presented. Various factors that influence the Indian housing system are listed and two key factors -- land and finance -- are studied. --Journal abstract
