| Abstract |
A variety of development strategies have been adopted and models devised and dispensed throughout the
developing world. While some regions and countries have achieved tremendous progress, especially in recent
years, others remain almost stagnant. This article is an attempt to present a very brief overview of the
development trends of the world at large, but with an accompanying focus on the case of Nepal.
Nepal possesses great diversity owing chiefly to its wide-ranging elevation. While the natural and sociocultural diversities provide ample scope for diversified economic enterprises and a rich cultural heritage, the landlocked situation and the rugged terrain have posed severe constraints to the nation's development. In addition, regional disparities continue to widen despite the adoption of a balanced development policy since 1972. The administrative and ecological regions differ among themselves considerably. The variation is distinct in terms of investment, per capita gross domestic product (GDP), socioeconomic services, and the level of overall development. Two major causes of this disparaging trend are: (a) continuing overemphasis upon the economic growth of convenient locations; and (b) the inadequate attention paid to the lagging ones. Pragmatic approaches and committed efforts are urgent in improving this situation. --Journal abstract | ||
