| Abstract |
This article introduces a new gaming simulation training model for sustainable regional development planning
in developing countries. It is designed for planner training through role-playing game simulation to introduce
various planning issues such as problem identification, conflict resolution, lobbying, negotiation or
decision making, and promotion. As computer technology has continued to advance, simulation models have
increasingly been applied to the development of social systems. It is now feasible to simulate a model system
for an entire world.
PANGAEA, the name of the UNCRD model developed by the authors, will provide trainees with backgrounds in sustainable development planning theory by seeking solutions to development problems and environmental issues. This article will begin by describing the concepts underpinning the design of this model together with the guidelines adopted for the new gaming simulation development project. Secondly, the planning of PANGAEA will be outlined, describing the case and role-setting which took place, based on the concept. The actual design and structure of PANGAEA will then be discussed in the third section. Fourthly, preliminary evaluation of the model will be presented leading to a final summary of the model and concluding remarks. --Journal abstract | ||
