| Abstract |
There has been a growing interest in migration in recent years due to an awareness of the increasingly
important role which it plays in the People's Republic of China's (hereinafter, China) socioeconomic
development. Fortunately, the 1990 census included for the first time selected items related to migration
which provide a substantial amount of information that helps us to understand the current migration process.
This article attempts to classify the spatial structure of interprovincial migration in China by using quantitative analysis methods including preference index analysis and Poisson spatial interaction analysis. The main findings are as follows: (a) the most striking spatial feature of recent migration is population movement from west to east; (b) the strongest preference flow occurs between adjacent provinces situated in the southern, central-eastern, north-western, north-eastern, and central-northern regions; (c) migration in most peripheral provinces is identified as "focused in/dispersed out" while in other areas it is identified as "dispersed in/focused out"; (d) distance is the most important factor and personal income at the destination is the second most important factor affecting current migration; and (e) the current migration patterns in China fir the push-pull theory. However, the pulling force is about three times greater than the pushing force. --Journal abstract | ||
