| Abstract | This article discusses the restrictions on, and policies affecting, resource movement and internal trade within the People's Republic of China (hereinafter, China). Evidence is presented indicating that no substantial increase in the relative amount of internal trade has occurred in the post-Maoist period (1978-90), even though with less central control of the economy one might have expected the trade proportion to have risen greatly. Some empirical evidence is then given about the impacts of China's internal trade, resource movement, and regional development policies on its economic and technological efficiency and on regional income inequality. It is argued that the current Chinese system has shortcomings from the viewpoints of the neoclassical free trade doctrine, the centre-periphery theory, and market-failure theories. --Journal abstract | ||
