Abstract This article analyses the contributions of rural nonfarm activities (RNAs) to the process of rural development in selected Asian countries. First, the economic case for the development of a dynamic rural nonfarm sector as an integral component of the poverty-focused rural development strategy in densely population, land-poor Asian countries is presented. Empirical evidence is them provided to show that RNAs not only add significantly to employment and output growth but also make important welfare contributions with respect to improving equity and incomes of the relatively poor rural households. In order to ensure the sustainable growth of a dynamic RNA sector, there is the need for an integrated sectoral and regional development within a national framework in which RNAs must have a clearly defined role. A conscious policy focus on the potentials and constraints facing the development of the RNA sector is indeed an essential prerequisite for a comprehensive approach towards its long-term growth. --Journal abstract
