| Abstract | Foreign direct investment (FDI)-driven industrialization has provided the engine of growth in many Asian nations in recent years. Shifts in the economic structure of many of these countries have illustrated the growing importance of manufacturing vis-…-vis agriculture in their overall performance. The degree of concentration of these industries and the development that accompanies it are polarized in certain core urban areas, leaning the hinterlands lagging behind, thereby leading to regional imbalances. In the context of balanced agro-industrial development, the agribusiness systems approach is presented as an option to alleviate this disparity. This calls for a holistic approach in the development of agribusiness which still plays an important role in the rural areas of developing countries, and the equal participation of the governmental and nongovernmental sectors. Emphasis is put on entrepreneurship development and its contribution towards enabling agribusiness to improve the rural situation. --Journal abstract | ||
