| Abstract | This article examines the meaning, definitions, and concepts of poverty. It discusses the main elements of Amartya Sen's concept of exchange entitlement and analyses its validity in identifying the problems of poverty. Finally, attempts are made to analyse the relevance of its application in understanding problems of poverty. Sir Lanka has been selected as the case area for this study. It is observed that such conceptual elements as unfavourable shifts of entitlement, loss of endowment, direct and trade entitlement, and sociopolitical factors, including low income, high cost of living, low food consumption and inadequate nutritional status, landlessness, unemployment, and poor social conditions, give rise to poverty. --Journal abstract | ||
