Abstract The use of remote sensing technology as a tool for effective natural resources management in the Philippines is reported. The earliest activities date back to 1976, with extent and intensity of usage increasing over the years. The development of local capabilities in remote sensing technology has given impetus to efforts of conservation and protection of natural resources and in the monitoring of dynamic environmental processes affecting these resources.

A number of problems are being faced in relation to the use of remote sensing as a tool for natural resources management. These include data acquisition problems in view of inadequate ground facilities; prohibitive acquisition costs of satellite imageries; lack of standardized data-coding formats; and few education and training programs in the country.

Future plans include further intensification of activities in remote sensing and related geographic information systems, with the development and expansion of specialized applications for, among others, oceanography and fisheries resources management, hazard vulnerability risk mapping, and tropical cyclone research. These are important concerns of the Philippines by virtue of its archipelagic nature and its geographic location in the typhoon belt and in the volcanic "ring of fire". Development of academic programs will also be given attention. --author's abstract
