Abstract Every year nearly 55,000 fires are reported in Japan, resulting in huge losses of property and life. Japan is among the few countries that actually collect fire statistics. The various agencies that collect fire statistics in Japan are surveyed from a historical perspective. For comparison, the statistical gathering activities of the United Kingdom and Australia are also surveyed. Finally, statistics relating to residential fires in Japan are analyzed.
