Abstract Although there is an imbalance in the regional development of Malaysia, the country is on its way to becoming a newly industrialized country. The Malaysian government has been deregulating markets and privatizing state assets in an effort to reduce the cost of doing business. Against this background, this paper surveys transnational corporations, discussing their centralized management style, transfer of technology, use of local resources, impact on local industries, and socioeconomic and environmental impacts.
