Abstract In past years strong economic growth in the Atlantic regions has resulted in the world's tallest buidlings being constructed there. With strong Asian population and economic growth, the world's tallest high-rises will soon be found in Asia. Indonesia's capital city, Jakarta, is a participant in this horizontal growth.

Jakarta is unable to keep pace with this rapid growth in terms of fire prevention. Lack of sufficient fire hydrants, heavy traffic, and lack of citizen awareness of fire hazards all contribute to a growing crisis. Fires in high-rise building have been increasing, but many barriers exist to adequate Fire Brigade response time: difficult access from streets, response time slowed by inadequate communication systems and traffic problems, lack of water, and poor conditions of fire-fighting equipment. Fire prevention is hindered by unwillingness of building owners to allow inspections, lack of trained inspection personnel, sprinklers not performing properly, and storage of good in escape paths.

The author advocates an increase in fire safety equipment in high rise buildings throughout the city as well as an increase in fire-fighting vehicles and equipment owned by the city.
