Virtual Reference Desk Abstract

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)

Created by the United Nations in 1951, the UNHCR helps those who have fled their countries because of fear of persecution for reasons of their race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group, and who cannot or do not want to return. Country-specific information can be found for all regions of the world. Images depicting the life of refugees can be found at the site as well. Publications of the agency are available online, as are hundreds of documents from the REFWORLD databases and refugee statistics.
