Monthly Catalog of United States Government Publications (MOCAT)

Title Monthly Catalog of United States Government Publications (MOCAT)
Coverage Dates 1924-current
Notes Since 1895, MoCat has undergone seven name changes. The most extensive change occurred with the July 1976 issue. Before that time it was arranged alphabetically by department of issuing agency (exept for Congress). The pre-July 1976 entires were brief, with subject access by selected keywords. With the July 1976 issue, Library of Congress subject headings were applied, Anglo-American Cataloging Rules followed, and MARC records were created for the OCLC database.

It should be noted that early volumes of the Monthly Catalog are not as accurate as citations or as comprehensive as those in the Document Catalog (1893-1940). For previous US government document coverage, see Ames, Poore, and the Document Catalog.

The Monthly Catalog can be used to track legislation, but for materials 1980 and after, the CIS Annual Index is easier to use. For reports and documents before 1980, use the CIS Serial Set Index. For hearings and committee prints, the Monthly Catalog is the place to look.
